Scouting In The African American Islamic Community
In 2001 after meeting with the National Relationship Committee head, the National Council On Islamic Scouting was formed in order to serve African American Youth Of The Islamic Faith.

This council came up with the idea of working with two programs that are rarely used in the African American Community, Exploring (Learning For Life)  & Venturing. We found that inner city youths enjoy working with Exploring and Venturing more so than traditional scouting.

Exploring: is a work site-based program. It is part of Learning for Life's career education program for young men and women who are 14 (and have completed the eighth grade) through 20 years old.

Exploring's purpose is to provide experiences that help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults. Explorers are ready to investigate the meaning of interdependence in their personal relationships and communities.

Exploring is based on a unique and dynamic relationship between youth and the organizations in their communities. Local community organizations initiate a specific Explorer post by matching their people and program resources to the interests of young people in the community. The result is a program of activities that help youth pursues their special interests, grow, and develop.

Exploring programs are based on five areas of emphasis: career opportunities, life skills, citizenship, character education, and leadership experience.

Venturing: is a youth development program of the Boy Scouts of America for young men and women who are 14 (and have completed the eighth grade) through 20 years of age. Venturing's purpose is to provide positive experiences to help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults.

The council has a nine member executive staff of both men and women who are in different regions of the United States who are dedicated to the two programs, the council also has a council commissioner and council imam. The council also takes part in interfaith events with scouts of other faiths,
